College Football Predictions Week 3 (9/13/13)

College Football Betting: 3 Best College Picks Of The Week

One of the best college football picks for week three of the season is UCLA over Nebraska. UCLA has a really good chance to win this game because Nebraska’s defense is utterly unreliable. Nebraska used to have an imposing defense throughout the Tom Osborne era, when the Cornhuskers prided themselves on a strong running game and a powerful defensive front. Nebraska played rugged and physical football. Its defensive line was hard to run against, its linebackers excellent at getting off blocks and filling gaps to make tackles. It’s true that Nebraska’s best years coexisted with a point in time when teams didn’t use spread passing offenses to the extent that they do today, but it’s still worth noting that Nebraska won the Big 12 in the 1999 season under then-coach Frank Solich, an Osborne protégé. The Huskers then made the 2002 Rose Bowl – the national championship game in the Bowl Championship Series – under Solich as well, sustaining the identity of the Osborne era. Through the 2001 season, Nebraska remained “Nebraska.”

Not anymore.

The Huskers’ defense allowed more than 600 yards to Wyoming at home in week one of the season. Yes, this game is an early kickoff, which might make UCLA – a team from the West Coast – sluggish and sloppy at the beginning of the game. However, UCLA has enough athleticism and enough power on its offensive line to control Nebraska’s defense for 60 minutes. This feels like the Bruins’ game to lose.

Another really good selection for week three is Air Force over Boise State. One has to realize that Boise State has reworked its offense in 2013, with sharply negative results. Quarterback Joe Southwick is having to make adjustments within a system that he’s not fully comfortable with. Southwick spent 2012 trying to live up to the expectations created by Kellen Moore, one of the great quarterbacks in the history of college football. The fact that Boise State’s coaching staff felt the need to rework the team’s offense two seasons after Moore’s departure tells you something about the crisis of confidence the Broncos are confronting right now. Air Force’s triple option offense is hard for any opponent to prepare for. The Falcons should be able to control the clock and limit Boise State’s number of possessions. Air Force should win against the spread.

Sports betting sites are going to identify a third betting choice as well in college football in week three, and it’s the game between Tennessee and Oregon. Tennessee might be an SEC team, and new head coach Butch Jones might have recruited well in the past offseason, but Oregon – playing at home in what could be very warm September weather – is likely to throttle a Tennessee team that will be making a long cross-country commute in the back end of a home-and-home series that began in 2010, when the Ducks crushed the Volunteers in Knoxville, Tenn. When SEC or Big Ten teams head West in September, they generally don’t fare well.

Monday Night Football 9/9/13

Predictions: Houston Texans will Visit

the San Diego Chargers on 9/9/13

The Houston Texans are expecting to make a serious run at the Super Bowl as they are coming off the best season in their history and look like a team with more upside. The San Diego Chargers are trying to pick up the pieces from the wasted Norv Turner error, or make that era, as new head coach Mike McCoy tries to jump start the franchise. The San Diego Chargers will host the Houston Texans on ESPN Monday Night Football as the 2nd game of a special double header with a starting time of 10:15 PM ET at Qualcomm Stadium. BetPhoenix Sportsbook opened with Houston as a 3 point favorite with a total of 44.

Top Offense

The Houston Texans have one of the most versatile and dangerous offenses in the NFL with QB Matt Schaub and RB Arian Foster. Head coach Gary Kubiak’s West Coast Offense should only get better as a key asset for NFL Picks. Foster is questionable for this one with a calf issue. Andre Johnson returns after posting 112 catches for 1598 yards last year. DE JJ Watt is one of the best in the NF and anchors a solid unit.

The Real McCoy?

Mike McCoy must rebuild a team that was ruined by Turner and the imbecile that hired him, fired general manager AJ Smith, who did accumulate a talented team but then made the brilliant decision to hire a proven loser like Turner to “coach” the team. The real tragedy is that QB Philip Rivers has lost prime career years that he will never get back. He must now try and survive with a retooled offensive line. It won’t be pretty.

Matchup and Pick

San Diego has gotten the money in 4 consecutive matchups with Houston. The Texans have failed to get the money in their last 5 Monday night games but have lost just 6 out of 23 games in AFC action. The Chargers are 11-5 in AFC matchups. San Diego is a team in transition and Houston is primed for a title run. HOUSTON is the pick!
Be sure to look over the other ESPN Monday Night game between the Redskins and Eagles!

College Football Predictions Week 2 (2013) pt 2

College Betting Odds: Best College Football Over/Under Plays For Week Two

The BCS showdown between Georgia and Clemson more than lived up to the hype in terms of going over the number in week one, and while there may not be that one game that stands out above the rest in the same fashion heading in to week two, there are some notable lines that are definitely worth playing. Here are three totals to keep an eye on in week two of the college football season.

Notable Over/Under #1: Buffalo @ Baylor O - 66

When Baylor and West Virginia clashed a year ago the line was monstrous, but by the end of the first quarter it was already on pace to obliterate the total. The Bears’ offense has the potential to be just as explosive this year, and it matches up well against a Buffalo defense that just gave up 40 points against an Ohio State team that had a starting quarterback who was dealing with an injury for most of the game. Baylor will put up some big offensive numbers in this game as a 27.5 point favorite, and the Bulls’ offense is good enough to put up at least a couple of scores to help push this number over the total. It may seem high at first glance, but both of these teams can score and the defenses aren’t good enough to prevent them from doing exactly that.

Notable Over/Under #2: San Diego State @ Ohio State 0 - 54

The Buckeyes scored 40 points in a win over Buffalo with Braxton Miller dealing with leg cramps and the offense lacking that crisp flare that is has developed under head coach Urban Meyer. Meyer wasn’t pleased with his team’s performance, and has asked for them to be much more efficient this week with Miller back at 100-percent. The offense should have no problem topping last week’s 40-point performance against a San Diego State team that gave up 40 points in a blowout loss against the Eastern Illinois Panthers, and if the Aztecs manage to score even a single touchdown then this game should go over the total.

Notable Over/Under #3: San Jose State @ Stanford – O – 48.5

This Stanford defense is one of the best in the country, and it should give the offense plenty of chances to score in this game. The Cardinal will force turnovers and set up excellent field position time and again, so this game could get out of hand early on. That should leave enough time for the Spartans to put up a couple of scores against the second defensive unit late in order to help push the number over the total, which isn’t that high to begin with thanks to the emphasis being put on the Stanford first-team defense being able to shut things down from the outset.

College Football Predictions (2013) Week 2

College Betting Lines: Best College Football Plays Against The Spread For Week Two

The top college football programs in the nation may not be ready for their close up just yet, and it’s probably a good thing for Nick Saban and his staff that the No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide have another week to prepare for a trip to College Station. Ohio State is back in action after failing to cover the number in last week’s win over Buffalo, but the Buckeyes have another favorable match up this week and should be better off this time around. Here are three spreads to keep an eye on in week two of the college football season.

Notable Play #1: Ohio State (-27.5) vs. San Diego State

Ohio State opened the 2013 college football season with three-unanswered scores against Buffalo and appeared to be on their way to a route in week one before things fell apart. Braxton Miller was dealing with leg cramps, the Buckeyes’ offense stumbled, and the defense failed to hold its own for four quarters in an eventual 40-20 win. It was enough to move on to week two with BCS Championship hopes intact, but head coach Urban Meyer was not happy with his team’s level of play and has asked them to raise the bar in week two. It should help that San Diego State is in town following a blowout loss to Eastern Illinois, which was one of the biggest shocks of the opening week. Ohio State should be better in week two, and the Aztecs won’t be able to put up 20 points the way Buffalo did.

Notable Play #2: South Carolina (+3.5) @ Georgia

All of the talk about Aaron Murray’s inability to win the big one seemed a little too much in the offseason, but after another tough loss at Clemson last week the critics are only getting louder. Georgia opened as a 5-point favorite ahead of its date with South Carolina this week, but that number is already down to 3.5 and likely won’t move from there as the bookies don’t want to get burned on both sides. The Gamecocks torched North Carolina both on the ground and through the air in a week one win, and should have no problem covering in a game they could very well end up winning straight up.

Notable Play #3: Michigan (-3) vs. Notre Dame

The Fighting Irish were absolutely bullied in last year’s BCS Championship game against Alabama, and this year’s team isn’t expected to be nearly as good. Michigan is coming off a dominant win over Central Michigan in which it put up a ridiculous 59 points, and will have the home advantage over a Notre Dame team that failed to cover against Temple in week one. The Fighting Irish offense isn’t good enough to come out on top in shootouts, and the Notre Dame defense isn’t nearly good enough to completely slow down the Michigan offense on the road this weekend.

NFL WEEK ONE PICKS (2013) PART 2

NFL Betting: Best NFL Over/Under Plays For Week One

Are you ready for some football? Week one of the NFL season is finally here and there is a lot to look forward to with a full slate of action to get in on this Sunday. There are a number of totals that could be enticing for NFL fans looking to make a big score, with three notable lines that stand out more than the rest.

Notable Over/Under #1: Falcons @ Saints U - 54

Two of the best offenses in the NFL a year ago are poised to be even better with the Falcons bringing in the NFL’s active rushing leader in Stephen Jackson and the Saints welcoming back head coach and offensive play-caller Sean Payton. All signs seem to point to this game having a lot of scoring on the surface, but it’s important to remember that these teams averaged 47 total points in two meetings last year and could play this game in a more conservative fashion with so much on the line. Atlanta will try and feed Jackson early and often as they look to establish a better balance on offense and play the possession game to keep the ball away from the New Orleans’ offense, and if new defensive coordinator Rob Ryan can squeeze out just one week of improvement by catching his opponent off guard, then there is a good chance this game will stay under the total even with a potential final score like 34-18.

Notable Over/Under #2: Vikings @ Lions O – 46.5

Two of the biggest superstars in the NFL will clash in week one with Adrian Peterson and Calvin Johnson set to go head-to-head. Throw in Greg Jennings, Reggie Bush, and a couple of overrated defenses and this game has all of the makings for an offensive explosion. Both teams feel they have the talent to compete for a playoff spot in the NFC North this season, so look for the Vikings and Lions to play to their strengths and put up a ton of points in a match up that could come down to which team scores last.

Notable Over/Under #3: Raiders @ Colts O - 47

Andrew Luck took the NFL by storm in his rookie season and is poised to have another big year under his former college coordinator in Pep Hamilton, who takes over for the departed Bruce Arians. The Colts have the offensive weapons to put up some big totals, but they didn’t do enough to upgrade a suspect defense and Oakland has had plenty of time to prepare. Raiders’ quarterback Terrelle Pryor impressed enough in the offseason to earn the starting job, and running back Darren McFadden is healthy heading in to week one. Indianapolis should score enough to win this game at home, but Oakland should put up enough points to send this game over the total.

NFL WEEK ONE PICKS (2013)

NFL Betting: Best NFL Plays Against The Spread For Week One

The long wait is over and week one of the NFL regular season is finally here, with a full 15-game slate scheduled for this weekend. The NFL schedule offers some excellent value with a trio of road teams that are being a bit undervalued, so it makes sense to make the plays on visiting teams that would be much bigger favorites if they were playing at home.

Notable Play #1: Patriots (-9.5) @ Bills

The Patriots dealt with as much or more adversity than any other NFL team this past offseason, but the one constant that matters is that Tom Brady is the quarterback and Bill Belichick is the head coach, which means New England has a chance to go to the Super Bowl. The Patriots lost a ton of weapons on offense, but no quarterback has done a better job adjusting to new weapons from year to year over the last decade than Brady, who has put up Pro Bowl-caliber numbers with Jabar Gaffney and Reche Caldwell as his top two receivers before. Danny Amendola, Aaron Dobson, Kenbrell Thompkins are an underrated trio of receivers and rookie tight end Zach Sudfeld has really emerged as a legitimate threat as the No. 2 behind Rob Gronkowski. The defensive front-seven is very talented as well, and New England matches up well against a Bills’ team that is missing the top two quarterbacks on its depth chart in Kevin Kolb and rookie EJ Manuel. That leaves undrafted rookie Jeff Tuel and journeyman veteran Matt Leinart to compete for the No. 1 job week one, and neither will have much of a chance to trade scores with Brady and an underrated offense that will be looking to make a statement.

Notable Play #2: Buccaneers (-3) @ Jets

Speaking of injuries, the Jets signed Brady Quinn after he was cut from the Seattle Seahawks earlier in the week and could end up needing him if Mark Sanchez can’t play and rookie Geno Smith struggles. Smith is clearly not ready to be an NFL starter, but has been thrust in to the spotlight thanks to a shoulder injury that could keep Sanchez out in week one. New York was already an underdog heading in to week one against the Buccaneers even with Sanchez, and as bad as he was a year ago this game could be even worse for the home fans if Sanchez doesn’t start. Tampa Bay did an excellent job addressing its deficiencies on defense by trading with New York to acquire cornerback Darrelle Revis and signing Pro Bowl safety Dashon Goldson, and they should have no problem opening with a statement road win against a Jets’ team that has far too many holes.

Notable Play #3: Seahawks (-3) @ Panthers

Seattle is listed as the No. 1 team according to some NFL power rankings, so opening on the road against a Carolina team that didn’t do much to upgrade a roster that failed to make the playoffs a year ago shouldn’t be an issue. The Seahawks have Super Bowl aspirations and that will likely require a first-round bye and home field advantage for the playoffs, so look for them to come out close to perfect in week one, led by a stifling defense that will be all over Cam Newton from the outset. Russell Wilson is poised to be even better in year two as an NFL starter, and the Panthers’ defense is not good enough to contain what the Seattle offense brings to the table.
